The very name ‘Ghost Ship’ makes us recall the horror film released in 2002. Starring Gabriel Byrne and Julianna Margulies the film revolves around an Italian luxury ocean liner that mysteriously vanished in 1962 and, 40 years later it was rediscovered by a commercial salvage ship as it drifted aimlessly in the chilly Bering Sea.

Well, not talking much in length about the movie that actually gave us all the goosebumps. Coming back to the track, Ghost ships or phantom ships that make up a big part of the seafaring lore have generated lot of interest in lot many people.

Looking at the historical ships is quite frightening and appear mysterious leaving the spectators wondering as to what might have happened to the crew members and the passenger. Drowned, disappeared in mysterious conditions and found after decades, these ships are actually horrifying.

A ghost ship is a supposedly haunted or ghostly vessel found adrift with their entire crew either missing or dead. Flying Dutchman

Flying Dutchman is probably the most famous Ghost Ship that has been popularized by ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’. The Flying Dutchman refers to the Captain of the vessel and not just the vessel itself.

Located off the Cape of Good Hope, The Captain of the vessel, Hendrick Van Der Decken while voyaging around the Cape of Good Hope with a final destination of Amsterdam met a terrible storm. Van Der Decken refused to turn the ship around despite the pleas of the crew. As a result, monstrous waves pummeled the vessel while the captain sang obscene songs, drank beer and smoked his pipe. Several of the crew mutinied. There have been many sightings of The Flying Dutchman often once at Muizenberg, in 1939 and in 1941 when a crowd at Glencairn beach saw the ship with wind-filled sails that vanished just as it was about to crash onto the rocks.

Lady Lovibond

The Lady Lovibond was a schooner that was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands, off the Kent coast of south-east England on 13 February 1748 and is said to reappear there every fifty years as a ghost ship.

Carrol A. Deering

The Carrol A Deering was a 5 mast Schooner built in 1911 with her final voyage found sailing from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on December 2nd, 1920. After leaving Rio, the Deering stopped in Barbados for supplies. Here, the First Mate, McLennan got drunk and accepted his inability to navigate the ship. The Vessel was not sighted until January 28th, 1921. On January 31st, the Deering was found aground on Diamond Shoals, off Cape Hatteras.

Octavius

Allegedly discovered West of Greenland by a whaler on October 11th, 1775, had the entire crew dead, frozen, the captain found in his cabin frozen at his desk with his pen in hand, accompanied by a dead woman, a child covered in a blanket and a sailor holding a tinderbox.

The Octavius left England for the Orient in 1761 when the ship became trapped in ice whilst traveling past Northern Alaska. The ship was presumed to have broken free of the ice in the winter months and the crew, dead from exposure, drifted with the winds for 13 years.

The Baychimo

Baychimo is a cargo steamer that was abandoned and left to drift the seas near Alaska for nearly forty years. Owned by the Hudson Bay Company, the Baychimo was launched in the early 1920s and used to trade pelts and furs with the Inuit in northern Canada. In the year 1931, the Baychimo became trapped in pack ice near Alaska was made break free and its crew were eventually airlifted out of the area to safety. It was later abandoned by Hudson Bay Company, but the Baychimo managed to stay afloat and for the next 38 years and remained adrift in the waters off Alaska. The Baychimo was last sighted in 1969 frozen in the ice off of Alaska, since then it has disappeared and is p is believed to have sunk in the intervening years, but recently a number of expeditions have been launched in search of now nearly 80-year-old ghost ship.

Ourang Medan

In June, 1947, the officers of Dutch freighter, Ourang Medan were found dead lying. Possibly the whole crew was dead. Several members of the Ships’ Company including the Captain, were found dead along with the corpses on the Cargo Deck including a dog standing on all four legs, frozen and snarling into thin air. There was no survivor found on board. All bodies were found dead frozen, strangely there was no sign of wounds or injuries on any of the bodies. The vessel sank to the depths of the ocean floor when the Silver Line members tried to board the vessel. Till date, the fate of the Ourang Medan and her crew remain a mystery.

Young Teazer

Built in 1813, the Young Teazer was an American Privateer Schooner preying on sea trade of the British Empire off the coast of Halifax. In June, 1813, the Teazer was chased by the Nova Scotian Privateer Brig Sir John Sherbrooke and Teazer escaped into the Fog. Shortly after, HMS La Hogue, a 74-gunned third rate ship of the line, pursued the Schooner as she was reportedly cornered in Mahone Bay. Some time later the Young Teazer reemerged from the depths as a fiery spectral ship and in the following year on June 27th, people of Mahone Bay saw an apparition sailing into the same water where the Young Teazer had been destroyed. Many report an overwhelming sense of fear when they see the phantom pirate ship. The Ghost Ship, known locally as ‘The Teazer Light’ can be seen on foggy nights, usually on the nights that fall within 3 days of a full moon.

MV Joyita

MV Joyita was a merchant vessel from which 25 passengers and crew mysteriously disappeared in the South Pacific in 1955. The 69-foot wooden ship was built in 1931 as a luxury yacht by the Wilmington Boat Works in Los Angeles for movie director Roland West. With 25 passengers and crew onboard, the Joyita disappeared in the South Pacific in 1955. Five weeks later it was spotted off-course partially submerged and missing four tons of cargo including medical supplies, timber, food and empty oil drums, the lifeboats were gone and blood-stained bandages were found. It is believed that the captain was injured or killed and still there is no explanation regarding the missing cargo.

Mary Celeste

Mary Celeste abandoned in 1872 was a merchant ship that was found in the Atlantic Ocean with its cargo and valuables completely untouched, packed with six months worth of food and water. Today, the fate of the Mary Celeste remains one of history’s most puzzling maritime mysteries.

Large and visually unusual holes have been known to us since the ancient times.  A natural depression or hole in the Earth’s surface caused for one or the other reason has been the topic of interest for human beings since ages.

Man has always been in the quest to search for mineral wealth thereby creating many enormous holes. Not only this, nature too has played a major role in creating these gigantic holes.

Few good number of holes can be found scattered across the globe. While some of them are smaller in size there are lot many that are so huge that they can be seen by astronauts with the unaided eye. Some of them signal a subterranean fire, open pit diamond mines, and others are sinkholes.

From Chand Baori in India to Great Blue Hole in Belize; there are lot many massive holes- brought about by mankind, made by nature like craters or collapsed cave systems. Here we have listed 10 most spectacular natural and manmade holes on the Earth.

1. 200ft Sinkhole (Guatemala)

The gigantic crater appeared in the Central American country’s capital, Guatemala City when a 200ft deep sink hole swallowed up a three-storey building.  Agatha was the first named storm of the 2010 Pacific season that slammed into Guatemala and neighboring El Salvador dumping more than three feet of rain in the region.

2. Well Of Chand Baori (India)

Chand Baori is a famous stepwell situated in the village of Abhaneri near Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Built back in the 10th century, the well of Chand Baori in India was a practical solution to the water problems faced by the local residents. Chand Baori well is 30 meters deep, has 13 floors and 3,500 steps. It is said that the ghosts build it in one night and it has huge number of steps.

3. Bingham Canyon Mine, Salt Lake City, Utah-US

The Kennecott Copper Mine is an open-pit mine located in Salt Lake County, Utah southwest of West Jordan. Located 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City it is the large layered multi-color, barren protrusion on the side of the Oquirrh Mountains on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley. Currently, it is the largest open-pit mine in the world and the world’s largest man-made excavation.

4. Glory Hole, Monticello Dam (California, US)

Located in northern California, the Monticello Dam’s is the largest morning glory spillway all over the world. The funnel-shaped outlet, allows water to bypass the dam when it reaches capacity, as it swallows a rate of 48,400 cubic feet per second. The distance from the funnel to the exit point which is situated in the south side of the canyon is about 700 feet. The hole’s largest diameter is 72 feet and narrows to about 28 feet.

5. Morning Glory Hole (Wyoming, US)

The Morning Glory Pool is one of the most prominent and prettiest thermal pools but is in danger of losing its colors when the Grand Loop Road used to pass close to it. Visitors from across the world come to see the pool and witness its glory but the fact that they throw coins into it causes the pool to cool and jeopardize the existence of the color-causing bacteria that thrive within.

6. Mirny Diamond Mine (Siberia)

It’s an absolute beast and holds the title of largest open diamond mine in the world. The mine is 525 meters (1,722 ft) deep and has a diameter of 1,200 m (3,900 ft), and is the second largest excavated hole in the world, after Bingham Canyon Mine.

7. Diavik Mine (Canada)

Diavik Diamond Mine about 300 kilometers north of Yellowknife in Canada. Producing 8 million carats of diamonds on yearly basis, the mine is in a remote area and is huge with its own airport.

8. Burning Gates (Turkmenistan)

Derweze-The Gate also known as Darvaza is a Turkmenistan village of about 350 inhabitants located in the middle of the Karakum desert about 260 km north from Ashgabat. The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. In the year 1971, while drilling the geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas, the result of which was the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed thereby leaving a large hole with a diameter of about 70 metres.

9. Kimberley Big Hole (South Africa)

Kimberley is the home of De Beers Consolidated Diamond Mines, some of the world’s richest diamond mines, and it is still considered to be the capital of the world’s diamond industry. Till date, it is considered to be the capital of the world’s diamond industry. In the year 1871 a diamond was found on a small hill called Colesberg Koppie. Digging further they plunged down into the earth to a depth of 1100 metres and created what came to be known simply as the ‘Big Hole’.

10. Great Blue Hole (Belize)

Located in Belize’s Barrier Reef Reserve System, the Great Blue Hole is 60 miles away from Belize City. Measuring 125 meters deep and 300 meters wide, it is believed to be the world’s largest sea-hole. Some 65,000 years ago it was created as a cause of sea level increase. Circular in shape, it is one of the major tourist attractions and is one of the attractive spot for scuba divers.

Engineering as it sounds is difficult stream not only till the time one is studying and has to pass the exams but throughout. Constructing any architecture or any other structure is one intricate job that involves detailed planning, engineering knowledge and complete coordination. If one of these is missing it results in unusual sometimes disastrous.

So predictably, the engineering team has to be in total co-ordination so as to get the desired results. The larger the projects, more are the chances of miscommunication and eventually, epic fails that sometimes might bring smile on the spectator’s face while sometimes these are sure to leave them wide mouth opened.

Lack of coordination or some kind of miscommunication; whatever be the reason, the fact remains that there are lot many times we witness the scenario where people stand gazing at them and wondering. Today, I planned to jot down the amazing epic construction fails that will actually keep you pondering as to why and how these happened and what could be the smart way out.

Throughout the time of collecting these pictures of epic construction fails I kept wondering that not even a single moment while constructing these, the engineering team understood that there was a major blunder. Didn’t anyone ever think during the long, laborious construction period notice?

What about the blueprints of the architecture drawn up before finally starting the construction? Whatever the case may be, wherever the problem was the fact remains that these epic fails are unusually stunning.

These construction fails are not so common but every once in a while when we can come across any such blunder, these don’t fail to draw our attention towards them.
